Chris Smyth - Head of Crime
Barrister
Chris has over 30 years’ experience as a criminal advocate covering all areas of criminal practice. He began as a solicitor and was among the first in the country to acquire higher rights of audience in criminal proceedings, followed by higher rights in civil proceedings. He was a partner of a large provincial firm, running a busy criminal department and was a duty solicitor for 20 years.
Chris made a seamless transition to the Bar after being called in 2006 and was soon instructed in a multi-handed murder. He has maintained a high-level practice, both prosecuting and defending. Chris is Head of the Crime team at Queen Square.
Chris is an effective and determined advocate who is always well prepared and is known for his practical, flexible and down to earth approach. He is able to combine the skills required of both a solicitor and barrister and is adept at building rapport with clients. He has considerable experience of dealing with those who have mental health problems or are otherwise vulnerable. His background enables him to understand and respond to the demands placed on instructing solicitors in the current challenging environment.
