Charles Row KC
Barrister, Head of Chambers
Having been made Silk in 2022. Charles is known for his meticulous and forensic case preparation, hard work and personal investment into every case he handles. He has legal, tactical and emotional intelligence which he can deploy with disarming effect.
He is an ‘inclusive’ leader and encourages participation from all members of the team, whether he is prosecuting or defending, the objective being of course to achieve the very best outcome for all concerned be they defendants, complainants or witnesses.
Since taking silk three years ago he has been instructed to prosecute and defend some of the most serious and sensitive matters on Circuit and beyond, including ‘baby shaking’, child homicide, multi handed murders, infanticide and gross negligence manslaughter. His cases often involve detailed expert evidence of a medical (often psychiatric) and forensic nature. His ability to absorb large amounts of material quickly and to present complex matters in a clear, engaging and persuasive style has contributed to his significant success to date and to repeat instructions.
He has also successfully defended alleged historic and more recent sexual abuse cases of great familial impact and is often privately instructed in such matters. His style lends itself to cases of a sensitive and delicate nature, often involving very young, very old and otherwise very vulnerable individuals.
Charles’ thorough approach and calm nature inspires confidence and enables every witness to present their evidence in the best possible light, whilst those he cross examines can find themselves drawn in but ultimately wrongfooted and exposed.
Other areas of interest
Charles has a keen interest in sailing and all things maritime and has prosecuted for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, involving a reserve Naval Officer racing his yacht at Cowes who came into collision with a tanker making her way into Southampton. The case received some notoriety on Youtube. He has also defended a man accused of destroying an ancient monument in a case brought by English Heritage.
