Inquests

When someone dies in questionable circumstances, the resulting inquest or inquiry is often high profile and always raises difficult emotional and practical issues as well as legal ones. We always aim to handle these issues with sensitivity and compassion. We recognise that inquests are invaluable opportunities to obtain answers and often form the foundation of a civil action.

We act for bereaved families, individuals or regulatory bodies in inquests at Coroners’ Courts, and our service is always tailored, thorough and supportive. We also often represent a variety of stakeholders at public inquiries, including government agencies, local authorities, law-enforcement agencies and private commercial organisations.

Our team are also experienced in the frequent civil actions that arise from a death. Our clinical negligence and personal injury practitioners can apply their expertise to the particular setting of the case and will be happy to consider cases on a CFA basis. Because we have a comprehensive understanding of health and safety matters, we are also often involved in inquests and inquiries where health and safety law has a large part to play.

We have particular experience in the following areas:

  • Death occurring in hospital and arising from medical incidents
  • Fatal road traffic accidents
  • Fatal accidents on the railways
  • Industrial accidents leading to a fatality
  • Death arising in care home or similar institutions
  • Death in policy custody
