Since completing pupillage in 2016, Catherine has established a strong criminal practice. She both prosecutes and defends in cases involving sexual offences, violence, drugs offences, fraud and other dishonesty offences.

Sexual Offences

R v CP (Taunton Youth Court) – Represented a 14-year-old defendant accused of sexually touching a care worker.

R v D – Defended a man charged with sexual assault. The defendant was a young man with learning difficulties, including autism, and Catherine secured a successful appeal against the conviction.

R v T & T – Catherine was instructed to defend 1 of 2 brothers jointly charged with historic sexual abuse of their younger sister. The client in this case had learning difficulties and the allegations dated back to when he was a youth. Acquitted following a 7-day trial.

Offences of Violence

R v B-R – Catherine successfully defended a childminder charged with assaulting children who were in her care. The case was heard over two days where Catherine secured an acquittal for the defendant.

R v J and others – Defending one of 4 defendants charged on a 13-count indictment, including GBH Sec 18, Aggravated Burglary and Fraud. The defendant received 20-weeks’ imprisonment.

R v S – Defence of a man charged with Threats to Kill. Listed for trial but succeeded in getting the charge dropped before the trial took place.

Dishonesty Offences

R v S – Prosecution of women charged with multiple thefts from her own elderly uncle. After a week-long trial, the Jury found the defendant guilty of the charges.

R v S & others [Operation Midas] – Instructed as a disclosure junior, assisting Oliver Willmott & Leanne Woodman, in the prosecution of six defendant charged with fraud in connection with £5m of grants. These were obtained from the EU and Welsh Government funds and tax fraud in connection with the development of rag worm production facilities in Carmarthen.

Catherine has built up experience in cases relating to road traffic offences. She is regularly instructed in cases of this nature in both the Magistrates’ and Crown Court from insurance backed clients.  She has experience on both defence and prosecution in this area.

R v KS (Salisbury Magistrates Court) – Catherine attended on behalf of a woman charged with failing to stop, failing to report and careless driving. During the hearing Catherine managed to get the careless driving dropped while her client pleaded guilty to the other offences.

R v AK (Cardiff Magistrates Court) – Acted for a taxi driver charged with driving without due care after being involved in an accident with an elderly pedestrian. After calling expert evidence in accident reconstruction, an acquittal was secured.

R v CF (Bath Magistrates Court) – Attended court on behalf of a client for a special reason’s argument. The client in question had suffered a brain injury prior the incident he was charged with. Catherine made her argument, which was accepted, and the client walked away with an absolute discharge and his licence was not endorsed.

Catherine’s background is in the Voluntary and Community Sector where she has extensive experience. She has a Diploma in Youth Work and was employed as an advocate for young offenders across three juvenile facilities in the South West and South Wales.

Immediately prior to commencing pupillage Catherine worked as an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor for a local charity, advising high risk victims of domestic abuse on the criminal and civil legal options available to them.

As such, Catherine has particular expertise in dealing with vulnerable clients and witnesses, and cases involving children and young people.
