Sophie Sheerin

Sophie has developed an enviable practice in her time at Queen Square Chambers.

She regularly appears in the Employment Tribunal, Crown Court and County Court. She also undertakes Civil, Regulatory and private Criminal work in the Magistrates’ Court. Appearing across multiple jurisdictions, she has developed a rounded and adaptable style as an advocate.

Sophie acts for a variety of clients, including individuals and organisations in education, business, the charities sector and the police. She is praised for her approachable manner and always has time to ensure the client’s priorities are properly understood.

In her employment work, Sophie was recently instructed in relation to an unfair dismissal claim in the Employment Appeals Tribunal. She is also an able trial advocate and has acted in multi-week trials of complexity beyond her year of call. She recently successfully represented a police officer in a claim for race discrimination against the Metropolitan Police and two pharmacists in a claim for unfair dismissal and sexual orientation discrimination. She has also successfully defended claims for unfair dismissal and failure to make reasonable adjustments against small employers.

In her criminal work, Sophie both prosecutes and defends, and has been instructed in cases involving harassment, stalking, voyeurism, malicious communications and indecent images. She recently appeared unled in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) in a case involving a s.18 and serious facial injury.

Sophie has a background in data protection and has experience advising on compliance with data subject rights and responding to data breaches. She was recently instructed to defend data breach proceedings in the High Court.

Before joining chambers, Sophie studied part-time for the Bar whilst working as a paralegal at Carter-Ruck. There, she developed a particular interest in privacy and freedom of expression, including where those issues arise in an employment, criminal or regulatory context.

Outside work, Sophie is a lover of flora and fauna. She is a keen gardener and can often be found on a long walk.
