My pupillage experience so far - by current pupil, Anna Johns

I started pupillage two months ago and my experience so far has been excellent.

I applied to Queen Square Chambers because a common law pupillage really appealed to me, in particular the broad variety of work involved. So far I have seen a good mix of family, crime, employment, personal injury and other general civil work. No two days are the same: one day I might be taking notes in a personal injury conference, followed by a day in the Crown Court, then a final hearing in the family court. The variety means work is constantly interesting and engaging.

Chambers has also encouraged me to gain exposure to the type of hearings I will be doing during my second six, such as work in the magistrates’ court. This supportive approach has made me feel more prepared for when I get “on my feet” in four months’ time.

Queen Square Chambers is a very friendly set and I was made to feel welcome from my first day. All the members are really approachable and I feel I can ask anyone for help. This is especially true of my supervisor, Mark Williams, who takes the time to help me, explain areas of law or queries arising from a particular case.

Bristol is a great place in which to be based. It is a vibrant and buzzing city with lots going on. In terms of the Bar in Bristol, everyone seems to be really welcoming, friendly and helpful to one other.

I am grateful to be training in such a supportive environment and would definitely encourage other aspiring barristers to apply for pupillage here.
